A Q&A with MindSalt Co-Founder Ann Thompson
MindSalt is proud to announce its official certification as a Small and Women-owned Business (SWaM) through the Virginia Department of Small Business and Supplier Diversity. We chatted with MindSalt Co-Founder Ann Thompson to explore what this milestone means for the firm, its clients, and the broader business community in Charlottesville and beyond.
Q: Why is the SWaM Certification important?
Ann: The SWaM certification is one of Virginia’s key tools for promoting supplier diversity and leveling the playing field for small businesses. For MindSalt, this certification means we now have preferred status in the Commonwealth’s procurement process. That opens doors to state-funded contracts and projects that might have been more difficult to access without it.
It also sends a powerful message to our clients and partners that MindSalt meets rigorous standards of ownership, control, and operational excellence. For a firm like ours that’s focused on impact, innovation, and results, it’s an important validation.
Q: What motivated MindSalt to pursue SWaM certification?
Ann: It really aligns with our mission. We exist to help organizations make meaningful progress, and part of that is showing up as a partner that reflects the values we promote: integrity, determination, and impact.
SWaM certification gives us access to new business opportunities, yes, but it also connects us with a community of like-minded businesses, along with networking and training programs that can fuel our continued growth and help us better serve our clients. That’s a win-win.
Q: What should clients know about working with a SWaM-certified business like MindSalt?
Ann: First and foremost, SWaM-certified businesses are vetted. We went through a detailed application process with the Virginia Department of Small Business and Supplier Diversity. Clients can feel confident that we meet high standards in terms of management and operational control.
Additionally, many organizations – particularly in the public sector – have supplier diversity goals. Partnering with us can help them meet those goals, sometimes even earning additional points in the procurement process. But beyond that, we bring a high-touch, agile approach to everything we do. Working with us means working with a team that values efficiency, responsiveness, and true impact.
Q: How might clients benefit directly or indirectly from engaging a SWaM-certified partner like MindSalt?
Ann: There are several ways. Some public contracts are specifically reserved for SWaM vendors or include incentives for using them, so that can make procurement smoother and more competitive.
There are also tax incentives for companies that engage with SWaM-certified businesses. But perhaps even more importantly, clients demonstrate their commitment to equity and inclusion when they choose to work with diverse suppliers. Data show that diverse teams drive innovation. Our clients benefit from fresh thinking and tailored solutions that are informed by a variety of perspectives.
Q: What does this milestone mean to you personally as a woman business owner?
Ann: Achieving the SWaM certification has been both humbling and energizing. It has been in the works for a long time, and the certification process wasn’t easy. Receiving SWaM certification is a tangible acknowledgment of our hard work, resiliency, and commitment to our mission.
It’s also an opportunity to give back. I hope MindSalt can serve as a role model for other women entrepreneurs who are considering this path – both as an advisor to them and a success story!
Q: What advice would you give to other women or minority entrepreneurs considering SWaM certification?
Ann: Start early and get organized. The documentation requirements are thorough, and being proactive helps a lot.
Also, don’t go it alone. The state offers great resources – mentorship, workshops, technical assistance. Take advantage of them. And once you’re certified, lean into the community. There’s a network of support and opportunity there that can be incredibly valuable.
Most of all, stay persistent. The process takes time, but the benefits to your business and your brand are absolutely worth it.
Q: How does SWaM certification shape MindSalt’s future goals and growth strategy?
Ann: It’s a strategic asset, no question. SWaM certification allows us to pursue larger, more complex contracts in the public sector. It also increases our visibility within Virginia’s procurement system, making it easier for potential partners to find and engage us.
It reinforces our commitment to belonging – something that’s deeply rooted in our values and important to many of our clients. And as we grow, it helps us attract the type of organizations who share these values.
For us, SWaM certification isn’t just a label. It positions us to keep innovating, expanding, and delivering the kind of impact our clients have come to expect from our team.
